Hvítmaga is an enclosed and hard to reach patch of land surrounded by glacier and mountains. This makes it one of the most pristine natural spots you will ever find. And there is a lot to see. Your hike begins on sand but soon you climb up the edge of the glacial tongue which you have to cross. The ice is moving very slowly under you and riddled with crevasses but your guide will know a safe way across. When you reach it, Hvítmaga is stony and barren but as you walk up the mountain the colors change. The contrasting features in the landscape are amazing. Deep canyons, high peaks, large standing rocks and a muddy glacial river stand in sharp contrast to soft green grass meadows and crystal clear streams. At Skógargil which separates Hvítmaga from Skógarfjall you look deep into a canyon where a glacial river cascades between grassy banks. The view is great across the glacier, black sand and green fields in the distance. When visibility is good you can see Vestmannaeyjar rise like mountains from the sea. Those who experience Hvítmaga will dream of returning there again,- and again.

It is hard to describe a hike in Huldufjöll in words. It is a place that makes you feel how small you are in comparison to wild nature. Walking there is an experience you will never forget. You will be captivated by the rugged mountains and the glacier and the constantly moving glacial tongue flowing down from it like the world’s slowest river. The hike begins and ends in Þakgil, one of the most attractive camping places in Iceland.

We set off from Vík and as soon as we go past the end of the mountain we see a wide expanse of flat land to the west, a valley that is divided into hayfields and vividly green meadows. To the right there are stately mountains but to the southwest you see the remarkable natural phenomena of Dyrhólaey. It is a 120 meter tall headland that extends into the sea and forms the southernmost tip of Iceland. Sea erosion has carved a giant hole in the towering cliff that protrudes into the sea. To the south of Dyrhólay there are tall rocks that are a haven for seabirds. The churning white waves of the North Atlantic breaking against the rocks and rushing across the black sand give the whole area a mystical feeling. Often you can see seals swimming as well as a variety of birds. On the top of the headland there is an old lighthouse with an interesting history. Your guide will inform you about the formation and the history of Dyrhólaey. On the way back you will enter Vík by a different road.

The visitor will learn a great deal more about this pearl of nature by taking the guided tour than by going on his own.

We will pick up our guests wherever they like in the village and the guided tour will start from there. First we will drive around Vík and tell you about places of interest. Then we drive up the mountain Reynisfjall and check out the birdlife. With a little luck we will see puffins. The view on top of the mountain is incomparable. To the east you see an expanse of coal black sand, Mýrdalssandur, and an impressive headland called Hjörleifshöfði that rises like an island from the sand. The little village of Vík lies close to the black beach that reaches as far as the eye can see to the east. To the west and north there are great views of Dyrhólay, Pétursey, Mýrdalsjökull and other natural phenomena. And from the southern tip of the mountain you look down on the giant pillars of rock, Reynisdrangar, rising out of the sea. We go by an old road back to Vík and take a rest stop at the church, perhaps the best place from which to photograph the picturesque Reynisdrangar. If you are interested it is possible to end the trip in the home of one of the the villagers and sample Icelandic traditional baking, crullers with coffee. You need to mention this option at the time of booking. This is a fun trip on which you get to know lot about our little village in a short time. It is an ideal way to spend a beautiful summer evening.

The majestic Katla glacier is one of the best kept secrets of Katlatrack. We are the first to offer an unforgettable walk on ice in this area. We go from Vík to the east across Mýrdalssandur where Alaskan lupine surrounds the old main road. Then we drive across coal-black sand until we are right beside the impressive Katla glacier. During the trip you will hear folktales of outlaws and ghosts that were (are?) believed to inhabit the sand. When you reach the edge of the glacier your guide will introduce you to the equipment, go over the skills of ice-walking and talk about the risks that you need to be aware of. Next you walk up a glacier canyon where streams run fast along the crevasses and form little waterfalls and whirlpools. After a light walk among the crevasses we reach the ice cap itself. Here our guests will experience an Icelandic glacier in all its glory. From the Katla glacier you will have a magnificent view of the surrounding country.

It is not advisable for you to travel up to the Katla glacier on your own as it can be dangerous. The track can only be traveled by jeeps and you are better off with a guide who knows the area.
At certain times of year it is possible to explore ice caves in the glacier. If you are interested you need to mention this at the time of booking.
On this trip, dear visitor, you will experience the area and Icelandic nature in a unique way.
If you are interested in a different kind of experience, such as seeing more landscape and hearing more stories, a short walk, an evening trip or anything else, please let us know and we will do our best to meet your wishes.
